He served in the Merchant Navy as assistant steward and was 43 at the time of his death. He was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Reid Warner, and the husband of Helen Warner, of Watsons Bay NSW. Bill Warner (Papa Bill) was my step grandfather .When ashore he stayed with my parents and my mother’s mother (and wife to Papa Bill). According to my late mother who related, many times to me and my late sister, on the eve of the sailing of Centaur Bill’s parting words were “I shan’t be returning but don’t let John Ross forget me. The ship is carrying armed troops and this is well known around the waterfront and we will be a target” As it happens I had the opportunity of offering a little “memorial” sip of single malt on the fortieth anniversary whilst on a racing yacht quite close to the position of the sinking. After “toasting” by each of the crew, we poured the balance overboard. I hope Papa Bill and his shipmates enjoyed the “sippers”. I didn’t forget you, Papa Bill. John Ross.
