Australian War Memorial, Treloar Crescent Campbell ACT
The Australian War Memorial holds a number of items recovered from survivors Driver George McGrath and Dr Outridge. Click here to view them online.
The AWM Honour Roll includes the 268 people who perished.
The close of each day at the Memorial is marked by a ceremony held in memory of an individual Service Person who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. At the going down of the sun, the flag is lowered and the Memorial farewells its visitors with its moving Last Post Ceremony. The ceremony begins with the singing of the Australian National Anthem, followed by the poignant strains of a Lament, played by a piper. The life and service story of the person being commemorated is read by a member of the Military Forces, family and official wreaths are laid, and visitors are invited to lay their own wreaths and floral tributes beside the Pool of Reflection.
The AWM has kindly offered the Centaur Association a permanent booking on 14th May each year. In consultation with families the Association nominates a Centaur casualty to be commemorated. The families provide a life story and the AWM provides the military service record. This combined story is read by a member of the military at the ceremony and a large photo (if available) is displayed beside the Pool of Reflection where wreaths are laid. It is a wonderful way for families to commemorate together, but it is not necessary, and often in the case of distance or disability it is not possible. You can still have your Centaur person commemorated in this way.
